Arts on the Square pARTner Spotlight: Meet Katharine of Spirited Art Scranton

Did you know you can learn to paint en plein air at Arts on the Square?  Our pARTner, Spirited Arts, is offering three fun outdoor painting classes right on the Square!  We sat down with Katharine Schkloven of Spirited Arts Scranton to find out all about it.

Hello Katharine!

Tell us the concept behind Spirited Art.
Spirited Art is an optimistic, creative painting class. No skill is required because we lead you step by step through each painting. We use acrylics on canvas. People bring wine and friends and leave with a finished painting. Most people find it very relaxing and fun. They are often surprised by how much they like their painting at the end of the class. This feeling of accomplishment and joy in the creation of art is why I started a Spirited Art in Scranton.

Where is the studio located and how people can sign up for classes? Can people “walk in” to the studio?
The studio is located in the Fashion Mall shopping center right across from the main entrance to the Viewmont Mall. The studio can hold 50 people comfortably so we have only had a few classes sell out. There are scheduled classes and most of the time, you can walk in and take a scheduled class. It helps us prepare if people sign up online at the myspiritedart.com website under Calendar – Scranton Classes.

What type of classes do you offer and what kinds of special or private events do you hold?
We have classes for all age groups – preschool Picassos (3-5), kids (5 & up), tweens & up, family, adults (16 & up), date night and create date (adult/child paint together). We also hold paint your pet nights. We have had birthday parties, corporate team building, girl scout nights, girls’ nights, mom’s clubs, bachelorette parties and fundraisers for various local schools and non-profits. We have also hosted Scranton Power for networking.

Do participants need to have any artistic or painting experience?
No. We believe that art should be accessible to all. You don’t need any special skills to take our classes. We guide you even down to mixing the colors!

What will you be offering at  Arts on the Square?
We will be painting our ‘Cool Frog’ with the kids, Summer Circle Tree (black tree on yellow background with lots of colorful circles and dots) for teens/adults in the afternoon (based on the artist Klimt) and ‘Late Night Lovebirds’ (two birds sitting on a branch in front of a large moon, lots of blues and turquoise) for the adults in the evening. There are 12 seats in each class and they should take about an hour to complete.
Is there anything else you want our readers to know about Spirited Arts?
My goal in starting the business was to bring color, creativity and confidence to NEPA. Each person should leave our studio with a little more of each of those three things in their life! The more they come, the more of each they will have. My team is very important in making all of this happen – Ky Betts, Heidi Van Leuven, Karlee Patton, Sara Cortazar, Stephanie Blaker, Katie Taylor and Annette Seber.
